What's New in BigBlueButton 4.0.x-beta.3

This beta release brings a major overhaul of the layout system, a new audio processing engine, and several user interface improvements. Administrators should note the addition of Ubuntu 24.04 support for BBB 4.0.

Layout System Revamp

The layout system has been significantly reworked. The Unified layout is now the default. Camera sorting and pagination have been refined, and a new multi-functional mode with dual sidebar panels is available. This gives moderators and participants more flexibility in managing their view during meetings.

New WASM-Based Audio Processor (BBBA)

A new audio processor called BBBA is now used on top of the microphone stream. It is built with WebAssembly (WASM) and provides improved audio handling. This change may affect audio quality and processing performance.

User Search and Redesigned Lock-Settings

The user list now includes a search field, making it easier to find participants in large meetings. The lock-settings modal has been redesigned and introduces a three-state presenter policy, giving moderators more granular control over permissions.

Pinned Messages and Presenter Requests

Moderators can now pin messages in the chat for emphasis. A new “Request to Become Presenter” flow allows viewers to request presenter rights, with approval tracking and notifications.

Persistent Pinned Apps and Ubuntu 24.04 Support

The apps gallery now persists pinned apps across sessions, so user preferences are retained. This release also adds support for Ubuntu 24.04 (Noble) as a deployment platform for BigBlueButton 4.0.
